Period 4 - Jenny's Current Events

Should GITMO remain open? How much rights should be extended to terrorists such as Abu Ghaith? Do you think Abu Ghaith should have the right to be tried in a civilian court? Is life in prison a fair punishment?

  1. Honestly I think the fact that Abu Ghaith made serious legitimate threats against american citizens including american children, should be enough for the governemnt as well as American citizens to realize that he is obviously very much involved with the terrorist organization. Sure, he should be given a trial, but he definitely deserves a severe punishment.

  2. Guantanamo Bay has no reason to remain open, it houses innocent civilians with no proof of any connection to any threat to national security. None of the detainees have been tried in federal court, and only few have been tried in military court. International law stating that all prisoners must be treated humanely has also been breached in Guantanamo, which is all the more reason to shut it down. There are terrorists in federal prison, and so far no breach of national security has been seen. Abu Ghaith is evidently a senior member of Al Qaeda and an enemy combatant as far as the United States is concerned, as for how much rights he should be allowed, I don't have an opinion on that, because he is considered a proven threat to the United States, he is legitimately proven to be inside Al Qaeda, and thinking objectively, he should be interrogated, but that would be a breach of his rights. Either way, Abu Ghaith should have a life in prison for putting the lives of many innocent civilians in danger.

  3. I definitely think that some things that happen at Guantanamo Bay are not right. The fact that innocent people are being punished that severely is horrible. However the things that Abu Ghaith were also not right. If his threats had gone through many citizens would have been killed. I think that everyone should be given the right to a fair trial, but not matter what way we look at it Abu Ghaith made a serious threat and serious actions should be taken against him.
