This is really one of those dilemma questions where no one can say that one side is absolutely over the other side. Personally, I do think this approach infringe upon the person’s privacy, therefore, I would definitely not recommend police to do so. However, if there is a real tough case where no evidence can be possibly found other than from wiretap, and it is a serious crime the suspect probably commits, then it is okay to go around the tangent a little bit for the sake of social justice.
This really comes down to one question, which one is more important, the speed of police solving a case or citizen's privacy. Personally, I think that wiretap order is not really necessary because after all, it is not like the police was checking through your text when it was not necessary. After all, if a person has nothing to hide, it shouldn't be a problem for his/her. The wiretap order just makes the whole process longer and more complicated and it does not mean that they will for sure not to look through your text record and gathers information from it.
I believe that it is necessary for the police to obtain a specific search warrant for text messages in order to gain access to people's text messages because a cell phone is a device that contains personal information. I’m betting that most people have things on their phones that they do not want other people to see; therefore they need to have those things protected. I really don’t see the downside of this law besides that fact that it adds a little bit more work to the investigation process. The people' privacy are protected and the police still have the right to search a person’s text messages given the right warrant.
