To what extent should we embrace genetic screening and selection in unborn babies? What methods if necessary can be instilled in order to control the spread of "designer babies"? What actions should be taken in a soiety which embraces gene selection to prevent the dystopian effects as outlined in GATTACA?
I think there is nothing wrong about wanting a brilliant and pretty child, that is what most of the parents want. However, from my understanding, this selection process is being performed after the formation of a new life. This is being too extreme. In order to create a so called "better person", they have to kill lives which did not seem to exist, however, they were still there. If it is like a extreme case, for example, that the kid is going to have severe disease after he was given birth and probably going to die in a few years, the action may be understandable (in my opinion only). But if it is only for creating a smarter or more beautiful baby, I think it is very unnecessary and unethical.
ReplyDeleteJust like violet has said, there is nothing wrong with people pursuing a better child. However, that does not give them the right to kill those unborns, a btter way to make the childen better is probably through careful, effective education after they are born.
