I don't think it is necessarily in the best interest of Canadians. Canada is a country with a lot of religious freedoms and social tolerance, so we don't really need an office of religous freedom.
Although I believe it is important to promote religous freedom around the world, our abilities are limited. I think that even if we establish an office for religious freedom, it would make little impact in the global community. Religous oppression will continue to occur despite the effect of the Canadian government.
An Office of Religious Freedom in my opinion appears to be quite futile and duplicitous. As far as how useful the office will be I believe that it will accomplish very little due to the fact that there are already groups in the world with low tolerance for other religions. The result of attempting to promote "religious freedom" in countries like Pakistan have been met with bitter results i.e. assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti. Also as far as duplicity goes, in trying to promote religious freedom, Canada appears to be sending a message that says "Canada's views are the best and everyone should follow them," which is exactly the opposite of what freedom is. Ultimately trying to force people with different views to accept Canada's ideal does not appear feasible.
I don't think it is necessary to create an office of religious freedom because with the level of freedom and tolerance of religion already in Canada it won't make that substantial of a difference and shouldn't be a high priority.
