It appears that Hugo Chavez had a relatively mixed impact on the people in Venezuela. There was a rise in jobs, which could be considered as a positive impact, but after listening to Augusto's personal experience, it is clearly not without consequence. The statistics do speak for themselves and with that increase, I am led to believe that there were more people happy about the decrease in unemployment. That should be a relatively positive change, however with regards to the increase in homicide rate, Chavez's reign had an alarmingly large negative impact. Personally, I question how much of the homicides his reign is directly responsible for. With the conflict, it is reasonable to assume that quite a few are a direct consequence to his reign, however there could be a lot of variables involved. Either way, I think it's a rather mixed impact that Chavez had on Venezuela. I cannot give a definite positive or negative, but if I were to guess, I would think that the next president would attempt to keep the increase in jobs and decrease the homicide rates, which effectively enforces the whole mixed impact.
I believe that Chaves had both a positive and negative effect on the country of Venezuela. Although job opportunities rose and poverty rates decreased, the rate of homicide increased substantially. I believe that Hugo Chavez had the right intentions, however did not go about it in the right ways. His big personality, and constant need to be recognized allowed for him to be easily loved or easily hated. His death allows for Venezuela to further pursue the principles that were for the betterment of the country, and to alter the principles that were not.
Hugo Chavez had a positive impact on his people/society due to his style of governence and his socialist program. However, due to the fact the government provided for or subsidized most public activities, from his country's oil revenues, in the short term and for now, this is positive, however, longer term the country may revert to a dependent society which may not function well at a high level of international competition and foreign trade. If the people continue to educate themselves and build a motivated population they should do well.
Hugo Chavez’s domestic and foreign policy support the people on Venezuela. He has used his invested oil revenues in anti-poverty programmes, sends about 3 billion worth of oil to Cuba yearly; in exchange Cuba sends doctors to Venezuela, and he sends subsidised oil to allies around the world which strengthens the relationships between them. Even though he has been able to drop poverty dramatically from 49% to 24% in 2009, murdering tripled in the last 12 years.
I think Hugo Chavez certainly had positive impacts on citizen lives in Venezuela, although he had negative impacts as well. Just like Ellen mentioned in class, the unemployment rate had dropped down drastically over the past few years(for example, poverty rate had drop dramatically from 49% to 24% in 2009), which is clearly a good thing for the poverties/unemployed people, especially those who had to maintain a big family. While on the other hand, his regime had either directly or indirectly led to the increase in homicide rate (it triples in the last 12 years). The causes are complex, but many of them were the result of the social instability caused by his reformation. Anyway, he is a real person and so he had both pros and cons in term of his regime. We are all looking forward to see what his successor going to come up with and how they are going to affect the society and the country’s international relationships with other countries.
