To what extent was Chavez' rule positive or negative for the people of Venezuela? Was he a hero or a villain?

  1. Chavez's rule was generally positive for the people of Venezuela. As the president Chavez did lower poverty rate from 49% to 30%, and reduced economic inequalities as he promised. One notable accomplishment of Chavez is his strategy to set the price for food in Venezuela. This is great for the people of Venezuela, allowing greater quantity of food at lower prices. However, this proves not so beneficial for the producer of food, because of Chavez’s strategy forces them to sell food while losing money. Not to mention Chavez’s questionable approach to those who violate his law by either smuggling food to other countries or refusing to produce food at maximum efficiency. In conclusion, while only examine the food an aspect of Venezuela, Chavez is thinking for the people, even though his method of doing so is questionable.

  2. Hugo Chavez was, in the end, not a hero or a villain. Chavez managed to increase the quality of life in Venezuela for the poor by turning the government into a more left wing government, he offered help to the rural areas of Venezuela, but this wasn't all. Chavez used political power to strengthen his own rule in Venezuela, almost like a dictator at this point, abolishing the presidential term limit and shutting down media programs that were too critical of the government. Chavez crushed all opposition parties and vilified capitalism. He was also said to "stop the modernization of Venezuela and keep it in it's old state by refusing to sell oil", so with the information given, his rule had both negative and positive aspects, and he was neither a hero or a villain.

  3. I think he tried to do what was best for his people in a way that he saw fit, it`s just that others did not see it as an appropriate avenue to achieve what he ultimately wanted to achieve. It is clear through the fact that he drastically reduced poverty that he was greatly concerned about the welfare of his people. I don`t regard him as either a hero or a villain, I just think he was a leader who wanted to do the best for his people.
